JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police have arrested a man for the murder of a 10-year-old girl in 1984.

James Leon Jackson is facing murder and sexual battery charges in the death of Tammy Welch.

The murder happened on August 27, 1984. Welch's family lived next door to Jackson.

Investigators say the break in the case can be attributed to a grant which allowed them to reopen the case in 1999.  Authorities re-examined all the evidence.

Authorities found a partial DNA profile on Welch in 2012. The DNA evidence linked Jackson to the crime.

Jackson denies any involvement in the killing.
