JACKSONVILLE Fla.-- If you drive in Jacksonville, chances are you travel over a bridge.
So when news of a bridge collapse in Washington made its way to the River City, it's easy to wonder how stable our own bridges are.
Action News obtained a list of all of the DOT projects that are approved and under construction. Action News found more than 40 bridges with overpass repairs and replacements in the works.
"We have bridgework all over the area," said Mike Goldman, spokesman for the DOT in Jacksonville.
In fact, Florida's bridges are some of the safest in the country. The study Action News obtained from the American Society of Professional Engineers ranked the Sunshine State in the top 10 for bridge safety, mostly because the infrastructure is newer.
Washington's bridges ranked 25.
"We have a pretty good track record, but it means constant vigilance," said Goldman.
Goldman said it also means constant repairs and upgrades; including the addition of ship bumpers at the bottom of the Hart Bridge.
The work costs tens of millions of dollars, but the DOT says it's a small price to pay for our safety.
