Dangerously deep ditches in San Jose may go away

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Action News found piles of rubble, high mounds of dirt, trash and even a portable toilet parked on someone's front lawn. It's a construction zone with no end in sight.

"That equipment at the end of the street, that might sit there for days and days," said neighbor Theresa Lyman.

We're told the drainage project off San Jose Boulevard has been ongoing eyesore for more than a year.

What neighbors say they're more worried about, however, are the dangerously deep ditches outside of their homes.

"Our biggest concern was the safety, especially for kids and then also backing out of the driveway made it really difficult," said neighbor Joshua Brough.

After countless calls to complain to city leaders, Action News has learned that Public Works has agreed to modify the design. While our calls to the department were not returned, we obtained an email they sent to a city official discussing its plan, which included getting a cost estimate from their contractors to fill the ditches with what's called grassed swales. We found that exact design on another neighbor's lawn.

We're told since Public Works placed that section over his ditch, it's helped absorb the water in his yard and says it should help the others.

"As a whole, if it gets the water out of our neighborhood a little better and we don't have standing water in our front yards, it's a huge improvement," said neighbor Peter Davis.

Public Works is now waiting on the cost proposal for the design, and says it should be another two to three weeks before they get it back.

Pretty simple answers to this problem. One, parents watch your children. Two, if you can't back your vehicle, turn in your license. DONE.
