ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Deputies are searching for a suspect in an attempted carjacking.

Deputies say a female victim was at the Kangaroo gas station at the 400 block of SR 16when she was approached by an unknown man. The guy said that he "just escaped from jail" and that he needed her car. The woman refused and grabbed her keys and cell phone from the car.  She ran inside the store to call the sheriff's office.

The man was not able to start the car and left the area on foot. Deputies searched the area, but were not able to find him.

The suspect is described as having worn a black t-shirt, blue jeans, tennis shoes and a light colored ball cap.

Deputies also would like to speak with two possible witnesses who were at the store before the attempted carjacking. One woman had blonde hair, and she wore a red or maroon colored blouse with blue jean shorts.  She was seen at the gas station on crutches and talking with the suspect prior to the incident. The other possible witness is an older man behind the wheel of a dark-colored SUV.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the two possible witnesses is asked to call the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office at 904-209-2192. To remain anonymous and possibly receive a cash reward you can also call Crime Stoppers of NE Florida at 888-277-TIPS.
