JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A dive team found the body of a missing boater near the junction of the Trout and St. Johns rivers Friday night, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The deceased boater is identified as 61-year-old John Engleman of Jacksonville.

FWC investigators tell Action News Engleman was riding with Gilbert Salinas, 51, when the two men struck a buoy in the St. Johns River, near the entrance to the Trout River, and were ejected.

Salinas was recovered by a nearby boater but Engleman reportedly went under the water and did not resurface , according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

"They tried to recover the other boater," said Officer Melissa Bujeda with JSO. "However, they stated that boater went underwater and they couldn't find him."

Other boaters reported the conditions were perfect for boating on the river at the time of the accident. Some witnessed the aftermath.

"The boat hit the bank," said James Mathis, who was out on the water at the time of the incident. "It was totally up on the bank, so it must have been going pretty fast."

Salinas was transported to UF Health Jacksonville and treated for his injuries. He was later released.

The FWC is continuing the investigation into the incident.
