JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The registered sex offender who is accused of kidnapping and murdering 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle was denied bond by a Duval County judge during the suspect's first court appearance Sunday.
Donald J. Smith pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Smith is accused of abducting the 8-year-old girl from the Walmart on Lem Turner Road around 11 p.m. Friday.
Authorities arrested Smith along Southbound Interstate 95 near the Interstate 10 split just after 9 a.m. Saturday.
Police later found the body of Perrywinkle near a church along Broward Road.
Smith is a registered sex offender who was released from custody last month, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
He was previously convicted in Duval County for attempted kidnapping and selling obscene materials.
