ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- One driver died and another has life-threatening injuries after a crash today in St. Johns County.

The crash happened this afternoon near the intersection of State Road 16 and Whisper Ridge Drive.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a red Honda Civic was westbound on 16 and Green Jeep Cherokee was eastbound when they collided.

The driver of the Civic was not wearing a seat belt and was transported to Flagler Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Jeep driver was air-lifted to UF Health in Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries.

The eastbound lane had to be shut down as investigators work on figuring out a cause.

The identities of the victims haven't been released.

FHP says the preliminary investigation shows speed may have been a factor.
