JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Duval County Democratic Party Chairman Neil Henrichsen called for the immediate resignation of Public Defender Matt Shirk on Wednesday morning.
The move comes after investigations by Action News and the Florida Times-Union. Action News' Lynnsey Gardner has been digging into allegations of impropriety inside the Office of the Public Defender since July.
Henrichsen referred to an article in the newspaper in which Shirk admitted to allowing alcoholic drinks in his public office, sending inappropriate texts to female employees, and possibly violating other policies of his elected office.
"Now that we have finally heard from Mr. Shirk, it is clear that he must resign his public position immediately to restore good government and public trust to the Public Defender’s Office,” said Duval County Democratic Party Chairman Neil Henrichsen. “Can anyone truly believe that this official, who has rarely shown up to work, is serving the taxpayers well and advancing good government? No way.”
Action News contacted Matt Shirk for comment, but he has not replied.
