JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Since Sunday, JEA customers have gotten an error message when they've tried to log on to the
website or pay their bill by phone. It's all because of a cyber attack that managed to shut down the utility company's web and pay-by-phone systems.
The FBI and local law enforcement are now investigating the attack known as "denial of service."
For more than 48 hours many customers have had no other choice but to pay their bills in person.
"It's a little bit of an inconvenience that I can't just pay the day before the payment is due and have to come down here," said Leilani Edqiban.
According to JEA, a crew is working around the clock to get the problem resolved.
"We are inundated with information and it's meant to be a nuisance it slows down the site or even stops the site," said spokeswoman Gerri Boyce.
The attack is also targeting employee emails. Workers have not been able to receive external emails since they system was hacked.
"No matter how good you build your system there are, unfortunately, people out there who try to break it," said Boyce.
The good news is the hackers have not been able to get a hold of customer information.
Customers are urged to pay by mail or in person at Winn-Dixie, your local tax collector's office, or JEA's downtown offices until the issue is resolved.
According to Boyce, JEA will not disconnect service while the issue is getting resolved.
