JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly motorcycle crash near Zoo Parkway and Parker Avenue.

Investigators say 47-year-old Steven Powers Gott was thrown from the motorcycle after hitting the rail arms at a railroad crossing Wednesday morning.

"The motorcyclist was unfortunately unable to avoid those and struck the crossing arms with his person and was ejected from the motorcycle," said Sgt. Dylan Bryan with the Florida Highway Patrol.

Gott was on his way to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, where he had worked for 12 years. His first love, co-workers said, was turtles.

"He was somebody who was dedicated to the cause here at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens," said Dan Maloney, Deputy Director of Conservation and Education. "He had a very wry sense of humor and it's still very difficult to hear that we won't see him again."

Gott was transported to UF Health, where he died from his injuries.

CSX was testing the railroad gate at the time, but no trains were actually passing through.

"First, our condolences are with the family of Mr. Gott," said CSX Spokesperson Kristin Seay in a statement to Action News. "CSX was conducting periodic testing of the crossing warning device at the Zoo Parkway crossing this morning.  The incident is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol."

Rail traffic in the area was halted for hours following the incident, but has since resumed.
