GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a double fatal crash involving a Sheriff's Deputy cruiser. It happened at 8:45 p.m. at County Road 209 near Pine Hollow Road in Green Cove Springs.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office says three vehicles, including a CCSO on-duty patrol deputy were involved in the crash. CCSO says Deputy Bryant Wiggins was driving on CR 209 when he spotted one of the crashed cars in the ditch and slowed down to assist. That's when, CCSO says that deputy crashed into a second vehicle stopped on the unlit street.
According to FHP, two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision. A female child under 5 years old was traveling in one of those cars. FHP says she's been transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Wiggins had a civilian observer in his patrol car along with an arrestee who was being transported to the Clay County Jail. No one in the deputy's car, including the deputy, was seriously injured in the crash.
According to the FHP, the drivers of both cars were killed. They have been identified as Shanice Johnson of Middleburg and Stacey Peternel of Green Cove Springs. FHP says Johnson was traveling with the child but it is still unclear what their relationship is.
Both cars did have passengers, according to FHP. They were not seriously injured.
FHP is investigating the crash.
