JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Fraternal Order of Police Union President Nelson Cuba has been arrested as part of the nationwide investigation into internet gambling with Allied Veterans of the World, according to three law enforcement sources.

Cuba was arrested along with FOP Vice President Robbie Freitas in Broward County and extradited to Seminole County.

The leader of the Allied Veterans of the World, Inc. and Affiliates, Jerry Bass, has also been arrested.

Investigators, according to court documents obtained by Action News, claim raked in hundreds of millions of dollars from a fraud ring that used Internet Cafes as a front throughout Florida and other states.

Action News asked Sheriff John Rutherford for a comment.  Spokeswoman Lauri-Ellen Smith told Action News, "At the appropriate time the sheriff will hold a news conference with details about the operation."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The FOP of Florida released a statement on the arrest of Nelson Cuba:

The Florida State Lodge is deeply concerned and shocked with the arrest of Jacksonville FOP Lodge 5/30 President Nelson Cuba and Vice President Robbie DeFrietas. These allegations are completely unrelated to the Fraternal Order of Police or their duties within the organization.

As a law enforcement organization, we firmly believe in the justice system that we all work in. We also believe in the innocent until proven guilty concept. Until the investigation and court process determines otherwise, these individuals deserve the full protections afforded anyone who stands accused of a crime.
