BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A bitter overnight chill sweeping in through Southeast Georgia has locals scrambling for shelter.

"Last year there was one of our kind of homeless mental health people in the community that died due to exposure," said Wright Culpepper, executive director of Faithworks.

Since that tragedy, Culpepper said he's been heading up an emergency shelter operation at the First Methodist church in Brunswick. They have 22 beds, blankets, warm clothes and food to fill hungry bellies, all for the homeless and families who need a warm place to rest their heads.

"I was sitting down on that pole across the street in them woods today saying I wonder is that shelter going to open because it's going to be very cold," said Tina Barringer.

While Brunswick won't be covered in snow, even freezing rain is too much to bare especially for Barringer who told Action News her home is a sleeping bag by the river.

"Well we're gonna make it. We'll make it. We'll all snuggle up together," said Barringer.

The shelter will remain open through Thursday morning if it doesn't warm up.
