Family, friends say goodbye to teen killed in hit-and-run
ST AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A 15-year-old girl is being laid to rest four days after she was killed in a hit-and-run.
Just weeks shy of her 16th birthday, Haley Smith's family and friends gathered inside Moultrie Baptist Church Wednesday to say goodbye.
According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, Smith was walking with two friends along Kenton Morrison Road Saturday night when a vehicle struck her and kept going. She later died from her injuries at the hospital.
A memorial sits at the scene -- a reminder to drive safely -- and the family hopes it's enough to encourage anyone who knows who's responsible to come forward.
Inside the church, a slideshow played memorializing Smith's short life and many tears were shed as her loved ones paid their respects.
The sheriff's office continues following leads. At this point deputies think the suspect was driving a gold pickup truck.
Investigators are also looking through surveillance video from nearby businesses for clues.
