LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A family is left searching for answers after Jeramey Sweeny, 30, was shot dead by veteran Lake City police officers.

Police tell Action News they were responding to a disturbance call. As they walked up the stairs of the apartment complex on South West Windsong Circle, they were met with a gun. That's when officers fired, killing him.

Sweeny's dad fights back tears thinking about the tragedy. His son is the second child he's had to say goodbye to.

"He's dead and he's my son. He's dead now," said Randy Sweeny. "If you knew him he's the star of my life I mean I love the kid."

A good kid with a heart of gold, Randy says what happened in the wee hours of the morning Jeramey never saw coming.

"He was laid on the bedroom passed out on the floor and the ex-boyfriend's brother had beaten him up badly."

Dad says that's when Jeramey's live-in girlfriend called 911. He believes police were responding to help him, but ended up taking his life.

"He got up he grabbed his gun I don't know why he did but he got his gun went out the door and as soon as he was going out the door he was cocking it and as soon as he walked out the door he was shot dead," Randy said.

Jeramey's step-father questions what type of protocol is in place for officers.
"There was no protocol," said Marc Mysels. "There was no hey we're the police knock on the door saying hey were the police and no hey drop your gun and to me that's the protocol before you just fire some shots."

All three officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation. Lake City Police confirms to Action News there was some type of altercation prior to the shooting, but would not release any more details. The FDLE tells Action News they are assisting and the investigation could take months.

I agree witg "BigGuy" and "nativejax" as well; however,in my perspective officer are trained to say something along the lines of " Drop your weapons or we will be forced to shot" Then again I agree with "nativejax" I would have shot any individual that is threating my life with no hesitation. However that's the difference between us as citizens and police officer;officer are trained we are not, so we as citizens go by natural common reaction, while officer do what they were trained to do. WFI LCP your not in Afghan or Labanon.

Do you know how hard it is to shoot someone in the arm or leg? Police and ccw civilians are trained to shoot for the 'center mass'. I'm sorry for the loss of someone's loved one, but there is more to this story than we are getting. It sounds like when he was beaten up, he wanted revenge, then his 'rational thinking' it sent him out the door cocking his gun like a crazy man. The officers do NOT have to stop and 'introduce themselves' or 'chitchat' or 'aim for a limb'. They are trained professionals...to keep people from acting and doing 'crazy life threatening' things. THAT'S THEIR JOB.

No one needs to be treated in this matter. The Lake City Police have a reputation for misconduct and abuse of power. I hope these officers get charged for this shooting. Where is the protocol? I know all officers are trained to tell the person to drop their weapon before firing. They could have shot him in the leg or arm first. A well placed shot in these areas will make anyone drop their weapons without killing them. The police need to be trained better. R.I.P. Jeremey... Send our condolances to Randy and the family...

The difference was the fact that you claim "he walked OUT the door cocking his gun",....that's why the the Officers reacted accordingly. I know I would shoot too if I was walking up to some 'strangers' door and I seen a loaded gun pointed at me. jeeze 'I'm not stopping and introducing myself to no-one if my life is in danger'.
