JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Princess Diana and Ronald Reagan are famous faces that are gone, but hopefully not forgotten by local patients being tested for early signs of dementia.
Dr. Daniel Kantor, director of the Florida Society of Neurology, has utilized the test for years from his office in Ponte Vedra Beach. "We are trying to test people to see how they recognize famous faces," said Kantor.
Kantor says too many people were failing the old test for dementia because it included faces like former Indian Prime Minister Nehru.
"More people were failing the old test because you had people like Nehru and most people don't know who Nehru was or what he looked like," said Kantor.
Dr. Kantor now conducts a test established this month at Northwestern University which includes updated famous faces, including Bill Gates and Oprah. Doctors say the results can be conclusive in diagnosing early signs of dementia.
"There are interventions we can make with certain forms of dementia. For example, we do have certain medications that slow down the cognitive problems."
