JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Rather than making summer plans, the father of murdered 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle is now making plans to attend her funeral. Cherish was kidnapped late Friday from a Jacksonville Walmart. She was found dead near Highlands Baptist Church early Saturday. That's the same day her father, Billy Jarreau, says he was expecting to see her getting off a plane to spend the summer with him in California. "He was excited about being able to spend the summer with his little girl," said Jarreau's attorney Gerald Wilkerson. "He had plans."

Wilkerson says Cherish's murder still hasn't hit his client. "He's grieving, angry, hurt and thankful for a quick resolution," says Wilkerson.

Action News did some digging and found Cherish's mother and Jarreau have been involved in a custody battle over the little girl since 2007. The court ruled in the mother's favor. "It was hard for the court to really see it was a good idea to send the child to California with my client," says Wilkerson, "The mother in this case just didn't have any way to pay for transportation, so she'd probably never see her daughter again."

As Cherish's father works to cope with the loss of his daughter, his attorney says he has a massage for the community. "Even though this ended in tragedy, he's hoping it'll shed light on the hazards of allowing pedophiles to roam the street."

Jarreau is also speaking out on Facebook. In a message posted Saturday he wrote, "To everyone I am trying to stay politically correct and not express my true feelings of how our great system caused this. I spent many years in the court presenting issues and being ignored and told I was trying to hurt the mother. Now, the truth of the great mother is out. It was at the cost of my child's life. RIP young lady. my nick name for her."

Jarreau's attorney says he will make the trip to Jacksonville from California for her funeral.

@Terri75, how much do you think it posts to raise a child today? This mother had already died a pternity suit against him which got dropped when they could not serve him. My guess? He moved away. Then he married wife number three and thought he would fie and get custody. In fact the record for the second action bears that out.

I'm not judging the mom, I just do not believe she was capable financially to care for her kids. And I also do not believe she had the parental SKILLS to teach her children 'stranger danger'. My children not only learned it from me DAILY, they learned it at a young age in SCHOOL. I do not contribute the fact I never lost any of my kids this horrible way to chance or luck. But to education when it comes to the RESPONSIBILITY of raising a child.

People on here are quick to jump and blame the mother and also to say that kids are hurt like this all the time when they are with mom. We do not know what happened in the custody case with dad. How quick we are to point fingers. It is extremely sad the loss of this child. But to point fingers at mom? That is wrong on so many levels. I could point out cases where dad was given custody (www.dastardlydads.blogspot.com) and the child was not killed by a stranger, but by their own father. I can also show cases just like this one where dad feels he is better than mom and dad is the one off his rocker. So please quit judging this mother. Several factors here - sometimes the news gets things wrong. They do report incorrectly all the time. Judge not lest ye be judged. Don't know about any of you, but I myself have skeletons and while I have no problem with said skeletons being revealed, do you want yours revealed? When you point one finger at someone, you have four pointing back at you. Just remember that...

I hope that's not the case but you never know about people. They could seem all normal but you never know whats really going on in their minds.

I don't see why this lady even talked to this old guy when she and her three kids met him in on edgewood at the store. Then they go to Walmart so he can buy them clothes. The perrywinkle's mother should be charged with child endangerment for allowing a complete stranger to walk away with her child. It's not like he abducted the little girl. The mother allowed her to leave with him. Thank god the guy didn't take the other two kids as well......I think there is more to the story i hope the right people will keep digging. I would almost bet there was some kind of dope transaction.

I'm so sorry for your loss too fccampbell 1964..you have my Prayers too. I cannot imagine losing my child in any way. Realchange I feel the same way, the courts should of taken into consideration if this mother couldn't afford to fly or bus her child to her Daddy once in awhile, how could she be able to provide ALL the daily things the child needs? In this case a dress, cost this man his precious daughter. Why didn't she just ask the dad to buy the dress? How many children does this woman have? How many with this man? A good mother with too many mouths to feed should look at her ex as a blessing if he WANTS his child in his life, if even only for a day or a summer. It is the CHILD that comes first.
