Fernandina Beach post office closure delayed
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- The historic Fernandina Beach post office will now operate until at least Sept. 10 because of appeals filed to the Postal Regulatory Commission, according to postal service spokesperson Stephen Seewoester.
The original date of closure was set for Saturday.
Action News found out the reason the post office could be shuttered is because of the price tag to bring the 1912 building up to code.
According to a recent report, the price to update the Centre Street location would cost taxpayers some $3 million.
The commission's website states they are now tasked with either siding with the postal service on the scheduled closure or recommending keeping the Fernandina Beach location open.
A final determination of the post office's fate is expected to be released within the next couple of weeks.
