ennis Risdell and Shirley Arington are proud of their country. They're veterans and in full support of the American flag.
"I saw a lot of good people come and a lot of good people go in the name of our flag," Risdell said.
An online petition is circling to hang flags on the Bridge of Lions. Before it was renovated, a number of them flew big and bold. Arington thinks it's only right to restore them.
"With Jacksonville just north of here being such a Naval town, absolutely. Absolutely," she said.
Ron Brown, attorney for the city of St. Augustine, says it's not that simple. An injunction was filed in 2003 that prohibited any kind of flag from being flown on the bridge. In addition, the city has no authority over the structure. Only the Department of Transportation does.
"The city does not own this bridge. We don't operate the bridge. We don't control the bridge," Brown said.
There's also no poles to hang any flags and it would cost to build some. Brown says the city is extremely patriotic, despite what people think.
"We fly the American flag on all our flagpoles with pride," he continued.
So far, the petition has 110 signatures and is addressed to the mayor and city commissioners.
Risdell hopes they can do something.
"Put the flags back up where they belong," he said.
Petition organizers plan on collecting 200 signatures.
