Fire destroys home in Fruit Cove

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- St. Johns County Fire Rescue had to request mutual aid from the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department to put out a fire that engulfed a home in Fruit Cove Saturday.

Matthew Sara with St. Johns County Fire Rescue says they got calls about a garage fire at 3:08 p.m. on the 200 block of Bell Branch Lane.  

Sara says when firefighters showed up they saw heavy smoke and the fire had spread to the second story of the home. There was nobody home at the time.

JFRD dispatched a unit at 3:24 p.m. to assist in the effort to put out the fire.  

Sara says it is too early to determine the origin of the fire or whether the cause is suspicious.
