JACKSONVILLE Fla.-- Her home destroyed in a fire, Lanita Shepherd says she still has so much to be thankful for this holiday.
"It doesn't matter what we lost that's material things that can be replaced but I cant replace my kids," she said. "So it's just us being together."
Shepherd is thankful her three children weren't home during the fire and for her neighbor Jason Campbell.
"I didn't have to think about anything," she Said. "Jason just jumped in and was like 'I have plywood, I can board your house up, I can do this I can do that. I mean they basically moved us over to where we are going to be living with his truck.
"What I did was very small and it was a very small part," said Campbell.
For Lanita, that small part that was a big help. This is what Thanksgiving is all about.
"Anytime you see a neighbor in need its just you do your part as your community to help out especially close neighbors," said Campbell.
Campbell even took it upon himself to bury Shepherd's dog, Juju who perished in the fire.
"It meant a lot to me because I don't think any of us wanted to see her," said Shepherd.
They may be spending this holiday at separate tables today, but one thing is for sure, they are giving thanks for each other.
"Jason is a god sent," said Shepherd.
