ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Firefighters from Station 17 had an unusual request for service Monday morning, after a citizen spotted a fawn lying along CR 210.

Engineer Jerod Burghart and Capt. Robbie McQuaig checked the deer for injuries and found none, however the fawn would not move on its own.

Burghart knew this was normal behavior for a young deer that was not with its mother.

Fearing the fawn could be struck by a car, Burghart moved the deer to a safer location.

I'm surprised that more people don't know that this is normal behavior for a fawn that is waiting for its mother. For whatever reason the fawn will curl into a ball and lay still waiting for its mother and they are usually not too far away. You can see videos all over Youtube where people are disturbing fawns that are hiding waiting for their mothers. You can leave them along and wait a few hours to see if the mother comes back but its not right to disturb them or take them until you are sure.

Hopefully this nice firefighter doesn't get punished for doing something nice. Below is a link to a story from Wisconsin where a fawn was involved. http://www.wisn.com/news/armed-agents-raid-animal-shelter-for-baby-deer/-/9373668/21272108/-/wvh1n7z/-/index.html

A few years ago a couple saved a fawn who's mother had been hit by car. The Florida Wildlife Commission came down on them as hard as they could. See it's not crime to kill deer during hunting season with permit shoot away. It is however a crime to save a deer take it home and raise it. The commission forced them to open their gates exposing the deer to dog attacks. The commission told them you cannot own a deer it must be set free no exceptions. Well few months later a guy was arrested for shooting a prize buck on hunting preserve that the hunters were using for studding then were going to shoot it. Because he poached it he was charged for felony destruction of property exceeding 15,000. Received a stiff sentence. So which is it ? Are deer not owned property that must be released all the time, or are they hunter possessions worth felony theft reports? FWC would rather people rollover and die than save a baby deer is the lesson I have learned.

In the country, many of us would find babies like this, which would need to be bottle fed before being let go. Most often, the doe would have been hit by a car, leaving the fawn to fend for itself. Hope he/she makes it.

My wife was jogging that morning and saw the deer she went to the firemen to see if they could check if it was ok. My wife said one of the firemen picked it right up checked it out for injuries or blood told her the fawn was fine so she went back to jogging.
