JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Many would argue it was Washington at its worst. Political infighting over the fiscal cliff has left a bad taste in voters' mouths. And as a result, many people are changing their party affiliation.
"Voters on both sides often get upset and want to change parties," said Duval County Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland. He says he's seen this happen before. He says voters often change parties after an election or after a divisive issue.
"It typically has a zero effect," said Holland. "We have just as many Republicans upset about which way their representatives, as Democrats upset about their legislators."
Here's how the numbers break down in Duval County. Since Dec. 1st, 311 Democrats have become Republicans or dropped a party affiliation all together. 334 Republicans have become Democrats or dropped a party affiliation.
Lenny Curry, Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, says the numbers aren't that surprising. "They feel like their government, at least at the national level, is not working," he said. "The real tragedy of this is that there's still a cliff. The cliff is that Americans nationally are not getting back to work and that we continue to go deeper and deeper into debt."
Holland says there's no limit as to how many times you can your party, so long as it's locked in 29 days before an election.
