NAPLES, Fla. -- It wasn't Santa Claus coming down the chimney of a southwest Florida home.

Naples police say it was 25-year-old Richard Tyler Brandon, who was attempting to break into an unoccupied home early Wednesday after he and a friend ran out of cash while they were drinking at Pelican Larry's bar.

The Naples Daily News reports Brandon's friend contacted police, who called the fire department. It took nearly two hours to get Brandon out of the chimney.

Homeowner Mike Whitley called the incident a "reverse kind of Santa."

Brandon faces two counts of burglary. He told the newspaper he didn't want to comment, but friend Derke Grenfell says he warned Brandon not to go down the chimney.

Grenfell says Brandon yelled for help when he got stuck halfway down.

Why do cities pass up great teaching vehicles? Dummies like this guy have been doing this same thing for many years. I suggest, stop filling our jails. I would pay for someone to leave him there (in the chimney) and bring him bread and water once each day for a week or two. The news coverage for this would be widely viewed and be a lesson to other idiots attempting this and perhaps be a life-learning experience for this individual. This would be cheaper in the long run. We have too many criminals because they have a chance at free room and board for a number of weeks. Jails are too comfy cozy, TV, phone, and NO WORK. Bring back 'chain gangs' let them fix our road maintenance to repay part of their cost of imprisonment. Our jail system is a mockery in other countries and a joke in Mexico.
