JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- Eight students and two teachers from Fletcher High School are safe at home after surviving Hurricane Sandy.

Eight students and two teachers from Fletcher High School are safe at home after surviving Hurricane Sandy.

The group left Jacksonville last Thursday for the World Mock Trial Championship in Brooklyn. They were to return to Jacksonville on Monday, but multiple flights were canceled at all area airports.

On Thursday morning they boarded a bus for the 16-hour drive home.

Students tell Action News they were somewhat isolated from news coverage of the storm, and did not realize the extensive devastation until they pulled out of New York City.

They arrived in Jacksonville Beach at 10 p.m. on Thursday, with a trophy in hand, having placed 10th out of 30 international teams.
