FLEMING ISLAND, Fla.-- As the sun sets on another Veterans Day, a controversial new fad is flying high in Clay County. Two flipped over flags have neighbors flipping out over what they call a disgrace to those who have served.

But one of the men behind the stunt says he means no disrespect for Veterans. A navy Vet himself, Philip Hoelzel tells us his upside-down flag is an old Navy sign of distress. This one he says is for our country, and its current condition.

"Our government is in so much trouble," Hoelzel told Action News. "We're $14 trillion in debt and we've got idiots! I'm not talking about Democrats. I'm not talking about Republicans, nobody's doing anything," he said.

In Fleming Island, Hoelzel flipped his flag after he learned Obama was re-elected, and he's not alone. Just down the road in Middleburg another family has done the same.

"It may start a movement, but it's the only thing I can do as an individual," said Hoelzel.

Most of Hoezel's block seem to support him; they say he's simply exercising his American rights.

"I agree with his right to do with that flag as he would like to, he is not burning it," said neighbor, Christine Burdien.

Others told Action News they are shocked by the bold statements, they are stunned by their neighbors whom they held so much respect for, so they are keeping quiet to avoid even more controversy.

Hoelzel says he has no immediate plans on when to return the flags to normal, but he says at least until the next election, or until change is seen in our country.

(The list above has been updated to include petitions filed by residents in additional states since this post was published.) The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.

hey,, look at the bright side ??? at least it isn't a rebel flag !!! of course if you fly that one upside down, it looks right side up ??? oh,, those southeners,, as grandma used to say !!! i tried this tactic up north & had the police respond to my home,, so the distress signal works ??? after i showed my badge,, the county cops left,, looking perplexed,, even after i told them 20 years ago, i was distressed at the path the nation was traversing !!! and these were college educated cops ??? couldn't see the forest through the trees,, even if you led them by the nose !!! patrolmen forever,, just looking to cop 20 & get out !!! pensions are a legitimate form of the PONZI scheme,,, the suckers get to hold the bag !!! i ranted & raved,, yet no one wanted to face the day when the bill came due !!! now everyone can't understand why we are in this fix ??? please !!!everyone wants something for nothing & a republic democracy cannot financially operate for any length of time on this method... 25 years ago when certain liberal yankee states couldn't pay tax refunds to their taxpayers,,, yet continued to with hold taxes on their salaries,,, i took notice & at the same time,, gave mine !!! i was withdrawing from with holding !!! better i owe the government,,, than the government give me an i.o.u. !!!in other words the money would earn interest in my pocket,, instead of being interest free in uncle sam's hands,, or state government !!! if you are fiscally responsible,, with holding is not the law,, rather a service the government provides ,, to ensure itself of an income with which to pist away our money !!! you have the right to starve the beast,,, abstain from with holding !!!! social security & medicare tax we cannot avoid at present,,,yet i'm working on it !!! as congress has not seen fit to reign in spending,, it is incumbent upon us to force them to hear the voice of the people & cut off their supply of ready cash !!!!

This is disrespect to those that are serving in the quagmire in the middle east. Those that will follow this "trend/movement" evidently do not know nor will ever seek the "big picture" of the monetary debt/problems of our country. Actually the veteran that is flying the flag in the "distressed" position appears to be ignorant of anything other then the information that is not accurate. Saying "it is not party specific" but because Mr. Obama was reelected, is obviously party affiliation. I served to protect the rights these ones are exercising. The veteran doing this is an embarrassment to me. I am thankful that I an not a Navy vet. I would like to know when he served, for how long, what his job was and what has he received in veteran services. Just interested.
