JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A ceremony 70 years in the making took place Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Wall.

Jessie F. Hughes, a 94-year-old resident of Orlando, was awarded several medals including a POW Prisoner of War Medal, by the United States Army, for his service during World War II.

Hughes was a radio operator for the 73rd Field Artillery Battalion, 9th Armored Division when he was captured by enemy forces during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.

Hughes was eventually released from captivity in April 1945 and was honorable discharged from the United States Army.

The former POW received the medals because of a campaign headed by Hughes' granddaughter, Alison Porter, that was started in 2009.

It's a shame it took so long for him to get his medals!!Even after his grand-daughter wrote them--it still took another 4 years!
