MAYPORT, Fla. -- Civilian employees at Naval Station Mayport will soon find out if they'll be forced to take days off without pay.
Many of the 1,054 civilian workers on base could potentially be furloughed as part of the strategy to meet budget cuts.
According to Captain Douglas Cochrane, Commanding Officer at NS Mayport, budget cuts are already impacting the work they do.
"We're seeing some normal routine operations curtailed basically from 9 to 5 Monday through Friday right now," said Captain Cochrane.
Captain Cochrane is worried the potential reduction in pay will be felt throughout the entire community.
"People will tighten up maybe not go out for dinner things like that and frankly its probably already started to happen," said Captain Cochrane.
Some of the areas that will likely be affected are port operations which will have limited ship movements. Airfield hours will not be extended while gym hours will be limited to 90 hours per week.
The areas that won't see any changes are safety and life groups, security and anti-terrorism forces, fire and emergency personnel and child care.
"I'm just asking them to stay faithful with us have faith in the Navy and the leaders and we'll get through this," said Captain Cochrane.
According to Captain Cochrane, no civilian employee has received a furlough notice yet.
