GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Police shot and killed a man who they say tried to stab an officer.

It happened Sunday afternoon in Gainesville, when police received a call about an attempted stabbing.

When they arrived they found 62-year-old Ghulum Yahya Mujtaba holding a knife in the parking lot.

Officers ordered the man to drop the weapon, but when he refused they used a taser on him.

That's when they say Mujtaba came at them with the knife and officers opened fire.

Mujtaba was taken to UF and Shands Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Gainesville Police Department is investigating the incident.
