JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Children are left without their father and a family is asking why.

Jimmy Carracter, 45, died on Interstate 95 early Wednesday morning after police say he was traveling south in the northbound lanes and came head to head with two other vehicles.

"I just don't want to believe he's dead right now," a shaken Krystal Skipper said Wednesday morning after learning the news.

As tears stream down her face, she struggles to come to terms with the fact the father of her two young children is never coming back home.

"I want to see him so bad."

Skipper says she spent Christmas afternoon with Carracter but that night he went out alone. She'd been calling his cell phone all morning wondering why he wasn't picking up.

"I wish I would have told him to stay. I should have told him to stay. I shouldn't have let him go out there like that."

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Carracter was traveling the wrong way down I-95 early Wednesday morning. He struck a car and a hauling truck head on. Carracter died on scene.

Skipper says they had plans to get married. Now she's left wondering how to tell their girls daddy's gone.

"I'm gonna miss him. I'm used to him knocking on the door coming to see us, spending time together. I'm just used to everything. Now that's gone. I don't know what to do."

FHP is still working to figure out if alcohol was a factor.

Action News did some digging into Carracter's criminal history. We've learned he's been arrested multiple times.

Here's a look at his wrap sheet from JSO:

Arrested 2-13-2006 -- Driving with a Suspended or Revoked License Arrested 6-2-2006 -- Charged with DUI, Possession of 20 grams Arrested 8-25-2006 -- Charged with DUI, Possession of 20 grams, Possession of Cocaine, Resisting Officer, Habitual Traffic Offender Arrested 11-5-2006 -- Driving with a Suspended or Revoked License Arrested 1-29-2007 -- 2 charges of DUI, Child Neglect, Possession of 20 Grams, 2 charges Possession of Crack Arrested 9-8-2009 -- Violation of Probation

It sure is hard to find a good man these days...He was not even close. He brought (not fathered) 2 children into this world...Did he have Life insurance? Of course not!

Actually, you got lucky. He was a loser. Sooner or later he was going to prison, and then where would you and the children be? Learn from your mistakes. Don't become involved with another loser, especially someone who would get you pregnant twice and lead you to think that someday he would marry you. If he hadn't married you before you delivered the second child, he probably wouldn't ever marry you. Sheesh.

Wow with a rap sheet like that, I would be shocked if alcohol WASN'T involved.

I am sorry for your loss. Drugs, Alcohol, Immaturity, sorry to say, seems to all be a factor. I pray that your children learn from the mistakes of the father. Mom, you will survive, and your sons need you more than ever. Be strong! Yes, you have suffered a major loss, but your babies have lost more. Be strong for your sons! They need you more now than ever! Prayers are with you and your sons!
