ST. SIMONS ISLAND Ga.-- Glynn County Commissioners stood in complete shock as they learned the disturbing details of the death of one of their own, District Two commissioner, Tom Sublett.
"His friend found him floating in the water," said Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering. "He was between a boat moored up, nobody in it, and a dock, that's all I will say.
FBI and Georgia Bureau of Investigation detectives are searching the St. Simons Island Boating and Fishing Club for clues. Sublett's car was found 150 yards away from his body in Gascoigne Bluff Park. His wallet was also recovered, but police say there are still a few items missing.
"They're searching for some physical evidence, I won't say what," said Chief Matt Doering.
Sublett was last seen playing poker with friends at 10:30 Monday night in Sterling, where he also dropped off a friend.
His boss at Parker-Kauffman Realtors was one of the last men to see Sublett alive.
"He was just his regular self," said Bill Parker. "Full of life, cutting up on jokes and no complaints, no worries that I knew of."
When he didn't return home to St. Simons Island, his wife reported him missing at around 2:30 a.m. Just a few hours later, his body was found floating in the marina waters.
As police search for clues, a community in mourning is searching for answers, wondering how anyone could do something so horrible to someone so good.
"This is a very sad day for Glynn County," said Glynn County Commission Chairman Richard Strickland. "We lost a good friend, a great family man, a community leader, a business leader and a church leader."
Outside his work as a commissioner, Sublett was a Realtor, a former chair at the Chamber of Commerce, a husband, a father of four, and a grandfather of two.
"He reached in every direction in this community and he was an inspiration to every one of us that's on the commission," said Strickland
An autopsy is slated for Wednesday in Savannah.
