JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's a holiday classic about a thief with a tiny heart. But one little girl in Jacksonville is learning the hard way that the Grinch isn't just a movie.
Her mother told police that someone took a package delivered from grandma to the little girl sometime Saturday. "I think it's horrible. People who steal from kids or steal from anyone needs to be put in jail," said neighbor, Danyel Wilson.
The delivery driver left the package beside their mailbox, and a neighbor later moved it inside of their fence. But it wasn't enough to keep a thief from taking it.
"These kids are looking forward to these presents. They don't deserve this," said Wilson.
The only thing left in their yard was the packages wrapping.
And it's a crime hitting homes all over the country. "My neighbors little boy's bike was stolen, and I don't think it's right," said Wilson.
The US Postal Service says they expect to deliver 365 million packages this holiday season with the busiest shipping day being Monday.
They say you can help keep your deliveries safe by having them tracked and requiring someone to sign for them. "Make sure you are watching for the package. Make sure you are at the house when the package gets there," said Wilson.
That little girl won't get her gift from grandma this year, but the family hopes her story will help keep grinches like this one away from other children this Christmas.
Investigators are now processing the wrapping that was left behind for evidence. If you have any information that can help catch this grinch, call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
