JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A local company is making it easier to eat better on the go. It’s called SmartBox and don’t expect to find any candy bars inside this vending machine.
The company’s motto is “Eat Smart. Live Smart.”
"We're filling a need in a growing $64 billion snack industry that is starting to offer healthier options,” said SmartBox President Brandon Stallings.
Stallings says he came up with the idea of a healthy vending machine in college. Now, he’s seeing his concept continue to grow here in Jacksonville.
"We've got more going out every day,” said Stallings.
As word spreads, so do the machines. There are already 40 SmartBoxes throughout the area, and Stallings says they have a waiting list of 59 customers who have already verbally committed. Their goal is to reach 100 machines in use before the end of the year.
“Consumers are getting a lot smarter, so we're here to fill that need,” Stallings said.
Instead of sodas, these machines offer beverages like Gatorade and water. Instead of candy bars, they offer Cliff bars. Each machine carries food containing low fat, low sugar, and no high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, or hydrogenated oils.
Nutrition facts are available on a touch screen for each product.
"The product that we actually offer is doing something that's intrinsically good for society,” said Stallings.
The company is hoping to get SmartBoxes in local schools soon.
