JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The I-295 beltway between the Buckman Bridge and Interstate 95 may soon be getting a new addition.
The Florida Department of Transportation is discussing the implementation of high occupancy express lanes in order to alleviate traffic congestion.
But drivers that want to use those lanes will have to pay a toll.
"I try to avoid it at certain parts if the day," said Gary Staton about the area of the I-295 beltway between the Buckman Bridge and Interstate 95.
Like Staton, many drivers agree that area of the beltway is a nightmare during rush hour.
Mayor Alvin Brown isn't on board with the idea of a toll road. "I'm against tolls all the way," said Brown.
According to FDOT, the toll prices would vary depending on the demand during peak travel times.
The idea is getting mixed reviews from drivers. "It gives people an option since it's a luxury item it brings more revenue to the state," said Staton. "I would pay especially if it got me to where I was going quicker," said Chester Bialik.
On the other hand, driver Lori Janoski thinks the express lanes would only make things worse for those who will still use the free lanes. "Even if they put an express lane and you buy a pass, generally that one is going to be open but everyone else is going to be crammed into two more lanes," said Janoski.
The express lanes are projected to open in 2017.
FDOT will be holding a public hearing on Tuesday, February 12th at the Ramada Conference Center beginning at 4:30 p.m.
