ST AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- When the Ancient City was built, no one likely factored in Black Friday, Night of Lights, or extreme growth.
"What we say sometimes is our charm is our challenge because we do have streets that were laid out over 400 years ago. We have sight-seeing vehicles," Paul Williamson with the city of St. Augustine said.
In essense, that equals a nightmare on the road. A picture taken in the 1930s, shows the exact same area with the exact same problem.
"I didn't know it was this small actually. Expecting more streets," tourist Richard Escobar said.
Cecelia Orr and her husband know to come prepared.
"There were some maps that basically showed where you wanted to go and where the parking was so we kind of had to plan ahead," she said.
Recently, a St. Augustine Mobility Institute study came out that outlined key congested areas. The three main entry points into the city including King Street, were listed.
Williamson says FDOT and other agencies will have to be involved for something to be done, but he's hoping for the best.
"All of that is going to be down the road sometime. For this particular holiday season, the best thing to do is use our parking facility," he said.
The 1,200-car parking garage he's referring to, is at the Visitors Center near Flagler College.
