JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Both directions of Seaboard Avenue are closed while the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigates a crash in Ortega that started with a home invasion. Now one man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said a home on Hurdia Road was broken into Friday morning, and the people inside were pistol-whipped. The people inside called 911 and gave a description of the vehicle to authorities.

According to JSO, officers noticed the suspects' vehicle near 118th Street and Blanding Boulevard. That is when they tried to make a traffic stop. A chase ensued and reached speeds of close to 70 miles-per-hour.

Officers said the car then crashed into a pole outside a home on Seaboard Avenue and flipped. All three suspects were taken to UF Health. The driver suffered the worst injuries. When asked, JSO Assistant Police Chief Chris Butler was not sure of the conditions of the other two men.

Police said no shots were fired but a gun was recovered from the suspects' vehicle. No neighbors or police were hurt.

Neighbors on Seaboard Avenue told an Action News reporter at the scene that people crash there often because of taking the curve too fast.

Action News spoke exclusively to the homeowner involved in the assault, Jack Smith. Smith said his mom, his mom's husband, his brother, his girlfriend and his child were all inside when the home invasion happened.

Smith believes the men broke in to steal $200. They did not get any money, he said, but his dog, named Blue, is missing.

He said his family is traumatized but walked away with a few cuts and bruises.

To save the cost of a trail it's to bad all three of them weren't killed in the accident or by police gun fire.
