JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Plummeting temperatures overnight mean a lot of folks will need to find a warm place to sleep.

Homeless people will have a warm place to go every night this week.  Gerard White is all bundled up. He has just the clothes on his back and a small bag. "It's been pretty cold nights."

He  lost his home last week and is homeless with a cold night ahead. "My unemployment got cut off. Of course my landlord evicted me cause I got behind on the rent," said White.

For the first time in his life he's turning to a shelter for help. Sara Dougherty with the Sulzbacher Center says they're seeing more people like white come through their doors. "With the current economy and how things are going in the job market people who've never been in this situation before that are finding themselves in need of shelter," said Dougherty.

With these cold temps, they're opening their emergency shelter. They're putting out extra mats for people to sleep on and making sure the beds are ready. "Sleeping outside or in your car at night when it's down in the 20's is definitely not safe."

That's helpful for people like Gerard. Even though he's used to the cold and snow since he's from New York, it's still tough not having a place to call home and a job to go to everyday. "The economy itself, no one is hiring, no work. You can't find it anywhere," said White.
