KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, Fla. -- A family of three is homeless just before the holidays after their home burned down in a fire early this morning.

Clay County Fire rescue got the call just before 5 a.m. When they arrived, the home was already destroyed. Although the house is a total loss, no one was hurt.

"There were three occupants home at the time. They all escaped safely there were no injuries," says Clay County Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Richard Kenoff.

According to Clay Electric, the power to this home was shut off last month. "The power had been shut off the 30th of last month. It's unknown what occurred after that but Clay Electric came back out and turned the power off again this morning," says Kenoff.

We spoke with a Clay Electric representative who says the family was taking power from an existing pole by hooking an extension chord to it. They say as long as the family got permission from the person who pays for that electricity, they weren't breaking the law.

At this time they do not know if that power chord is what caused the fire. The fire Marshall is out here investigating the cause of this early morning fire.

The owner of this home died several months ago and it has been empty until the last few weeks. Also there has been three other fires that this family has had happen to them in the last couple years and lost two homes with the last one of their homes being burned only a few months ago and located next door to this neighbour's home that burned down this morning. Makes one wonder.
