HASTINGS, Fla. -- Human remains have been found in a car that was smoldering along a dirt road "leading to nowhere" in Flagler Estates, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. Foul play is suspected.
Commander Chuck Mulligan told Action News the discovery of a burning car on an isolated road is suspicious.
"The circumstances surrounding the location of this car, once we did some background investigation to whom the car belonged to, where it came from, etc., that really set us in motion to, without confirmation, believing this set of circumstances was suspicious," said Mulligan.
People driving down County Road 13 near Cowpen Branch Road first spotted the smoldering car around 5 a.m. Friday.
"We do know where the vehicle is registered. We know where it came from," Mulligan said.
He said some details led them to believe a crime may have been committed.
"There are always forensics that we can work with, arson investigators who are experts in fire science. That's one avenue," Mulligan said.
Action News asked if investigators compared the car with information on missing person cases. Mulligan said investigators will do that, but won't release what they found.
