JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Action News is learning more about human trafficking in Jacksonville after a North Carolina mother sold her daughter for sex.
They're walking right next to you and you don't even know it. Girls sold for sex. Action News has learned it's happening here.
Now, the Northeast Florida Human Trafficking Task Force needs your helping tracking these young girls down.
"Ask the question, are you allowed to leave. Do you have the freedom to come and go as you please," said Crystal Freed. She's the task force co-chair.
Freed says there have been several cases here that are alarming. Just last month, Marvin Leigh Madkins was sentenced to 50 years in jail for sex trafficking. Court paperwork Action News obtained shows he brought two girls from Virginia to Jacksonville, promising them a better life. Now, we know they acted as prostitutes and got customers through Craigslist.
"They're doing it cause it's how they make their money," said Freed.
Freed says the girls come here, without knowing a soul.
"It's modern day slavery," she said.
That's why Freed says police are now more determined to crack down on human trafficking.
