Hundreds of volunteers build home for a local hero
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- It's a literal homecoming today in St. Augustine for a Marine seriously injured in Afghanistan.
Marine Cpl. Tyler Southern has been at the Walter Reed Medical Center since May rehabilitating after losing both legs and an arm in an IED explosion.
Friday hundreds of volunteers are working together to break ground on his new home. The group Homes for our Troops helps give back to heroes across the nation who have been seriously injured serving our country.
"I was proud to be from Jacksonville before I was injured," said Cpl. Southern. "This, I don't even know what to call it if this is pride so I just want to thank Jacksonville again for everything they've done for me."
Cpl. Southern and his new wife Ashley got to stand inside the front door frame as the first wall went up.
The building brigade will continue all weekend. Builders estimate the home will be move-in ready in about three weeks.
