JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- More than 40 years ago Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. could've only hoped for a scene like Monday, where hundreds of blacks and whites can stand in a crowd while they celebrate his birthday. But it wasn't celebrated like any typical birthday.

Hundreds of motorcycles revved up the crowd to start the parade.

Then Jacksonville's first black mayor made his way through the parade, shaking hands with hundreds of neighbors lining the streets.

Locals in the crowd say part of the celebration is giving thanks to the man who they say made all of this possible.

"They had to use the water fountains at different places, white and black and now it's not like that," says Gennetta Smith.

These are changes Smith says she and other residents can see on the streets of downtown Jacksonville.

"I'm happy that Martin Luther King existed because then I would of never had a momma and case I'm mixed with black and white and I would have been a white person or a black person," said Xayla Brown.

"It makes me happy because everybody's coming to watch the parade," said Ja'Kirah Nicholson.

Also in the more than three-hour parade, Action News' Dawn Lopez, who joined Hot 106.5.

The event also helped share King's dream

"It did come true because we are all integrated together and united together as one," said Smith.
