PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- An inmate trying to escape the Putnam County jail was shot Wednesday morning. Michael Campbell died at Putnam Medical Center just after 10 a.m.
Sheriff Hardy says Campbell had climbed a perimeter containment fence while he was in a recreation yard. When a corrections deputy told him to stop, he jumped from the top of the fence and tried to take off. The corrections deputy shot Campbell as he tried to get away.
We're told Campbell was a Department of Corrections Inmate who was being temporarily detained at the Putnam County Jail until he made a court appearance at a child custody hearing.
He has been behind bars since 2003 on charges of Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of Cocaine.
In a separate incident, Doni Brown and Timothy Fletcher successfully escaped from the jail and murdered a woman last April. They were captured a week later by police and are now back behind bars. The escape led the Putnam County Sheriff's Office to do a full investigation into the security of the jail.
