Jacksonville, Fla.-- A mother is accused of stuffing her baby girl into a gym bag.
The 15 month old baby girl is safe and sound. She's staying with relatives. The details in the police report are disturbing. It says a 15 month old baby girl was stuffed in a gym bag in the back seat of her own mother's car. Now Leendra Dasher is in jail. Dasher's own neighbor said she couldn't believe it when she came home and found the note from police about what happened. "There was a note on the door saying if we'd heard anything to give police a call," said Janyce Whiteside.
Police say the mother called them last week, saying her daughter was missing. When they got there, police found the child in the gym bag in the back seat of dasher's car, still alive. According to the police report, Dasher said she put the child in her crib at 11pm to go to sleep and no one else had access to the infant.
John Harrell is a spokesperson for the Department of Children and Families. He doesn't know what would cause someone to do something like this. "We were very disturbed. It's a very inhuman treatment of a child," said Harrell.
But while a mother is behind bars for now, her neighbor is just glad the baby is safe and sound. "I prayed the baby was safe. We don't know what's going on in people's homes," said Whiteside.
Dasher denied having any involvement in this crime. She also denied having any knowledge of anyone else committing the crime. Investigators are now working to figure out how long the baby was zipped up in the bag. Dasher is in jail, charged with aggravated child abuse.
