JACKSONVILLE, Fla -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office made a public plea for help Thursday. They're looking for clues that could help them solve the murder of an 83-year-old Southside man.
Bob Levey was found dead inside his home on Mimosa Drive late Tuesday night. Lt. Rob Schoonover with JSO couldn't released a specific cause of death. But he did say, "I can tell you this. It was a brutal murder in that house behind me. Brutal."
Levey's house was set on fire and a suspect was seen running away. Police believe robbery was the motive. But why anyone would want Levey dead is a mystery to his friends and neighbors.
Friend William Townsend said, "I don't see why or how. Because everybody loved that old man, you know. It's way beyond me, way beyond me."
Police want you to report anything suspicious, which could include a sudden, recent, and drastic change in appearance. Or unexplained injuries on a person's hands.
A witness said the suspect was a young man, late teens, early 20's. They say he's 5'6" or 5'7", 120 pounds, with long, dark hair. They say he was wearing a shorts and green T-shirt, and carrying a black and white backpack.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
