JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Authorities identified the man shot and killed by police Sunday night as Jarmel Anthony Cosby.
Police said Cosby robbed a convenience store on Lem Turner Road Sunday night when an officer spotted him and chased him down the street. Cosby ended up in the 2300 block of Broward Road.
"Cosby attempted to jump a fence in between the houses and he fell," said Annie Smith, Chief of Investigations for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. "When he fell, the gun came out of his hand. Officer Crawford ordered him not to move and not to reach for the gun. Unfortunately, Mr. Cosby reached for the gun and Officer Crawford was forced to shoot him."
Police say Cosby reached for the gun and the Officer M.W. Crawford fired three shots, killing Cosby. People who live nearby heard the shots, and were unnerved by what happened.
"We were scared," said Donna Trimble, who was taking care of her elderly parents. "You don't have stuff like that happen around here, but nobody expects it."
Crawford is on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure after the use of lethal force.
