JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The words are strong and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office hopes the message is just as powerful.

"It's just another way to get information out there that crashes tend to occur here," said officer Shannon Hartley with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The signs say, "pedestrian fatality area, please use crosswalks, don't make this your last walk, no jaywalking."

JSO says these signs are sitting where pedestrians have died.

A driver struck and killed Esther Ohayon back in September as she tried to cross San Jose Boulevard.

"It is a heavily-used intersection for Sabbath observant people," said Rabbi Jonathan Lubliner.

There is another sign on Beach Boulevard that marks where a vehicle struck another pedestrian this summer.

"So the same signs those drivers see, pedestrians will see, they'll be aware of it," said Hartley.

JSO says they will move the signs around town to where they think crashes are more likely to occur.

Hartley says this is all part of a much bigger campaign, "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow."
