JSO issues alert about debt collector scam
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is alerting people about a scam involving JSO's non-emergency number and people posing as debt collectors.
Police say the scammers are calling people about a debt.
The phone number shows up on caller ID as JSO's non-emergency line, 904-630-0500.
Police say the scammers are threatening people if they don't pay a debt.
The victims are led to believe they have a debt when they really don't.
JSO says it never acts as a debt collection agency.
JSO says these kinds of spoofing scams are becoming more prevalent and that people should not rely on caller ID to validate the identity of the person on the other end of the line.
Authorities also say people should never give out personal information over the phone.
Call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS if you know any information about the scammers. You will remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward if your tip leads to an arrest.
