JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says an officer had to shoot a wanted man after he used his car as a weapon.
Carl Ward, 35, had an active warrant for felony domestic battery. On Monday night, an anonymous person called police saying Ward was in the Sanctuary Walk Apartments and was making threatening phone calls.
When an officer arrived at the complex, police say they made contact with Ward.
"After repeated attempts to contact that subject were unsuccessful, that officer called for backup that arrived a short time later," said Chief Tom Hackney.
According to JSO, the first officer was walking back to his patrol car, when the suspect started reversing his car towards the officer.
Police say they found a loaded gun inside Ward's car. He was booked into the Duval County Jail on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of drugs. Ward is also a person of interest in a sex crime last July.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard operating procedure.
"Fearing for the safety of Officer Kremlin, Officer Bueno discharged his issued handgun at the subject four times. The suspect was struck by the projectiles several times and was taken to a local hospital," says Hackney.
