JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Investigators are trying to determine how a man ended up dead near Kings Road in Northwest Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says they responded to the 2000 block of McMillan St. around 7 a.m. and found a man's body on the sidewalk. Friends and family tell Action News the man was JTA bus driver Thomas Michael Kirby.  He was 36, according to police who identified him on Monday.

A vigil was held in memory of Kirby Sunday. His family and friends hope to deliver a message to whomever may have killed him.

“He didn’t deserve this. He was a great guy. He wouldn’t hurt anybody,” said Kirby’s best friend, Felix Garcia.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says they are not sure if someone killed Kirby there or dumped his body.

James Smith, who spends a lot of time on McMillan Street visiting family says he's concerned about his family's safety following the discovery of a man's body on the sidewalk just outside 2017 McMillan St.

"I think they do need to do a lot more patrolling the neighborhood because this is like the first time this happened in a long time, and I have kids and you don't want to be seeing that in the neighborhood," said Smith.

Residents like Mike Doyle describe the community as calm, but he says you do see some crime.

"This neighborhood is pretty much quiet but that's the first time we've ever seen this. I've never seen something diagonal from where I live at, so that's kind of shocking," said Doyle.

Police are not saying how Kirby died.

A neighborhood watch program sign is posted about 50 yards away from where the body was found, but that program expired in 2005.

"The neighborhood watch crime, I guess that failed, it hasn't been over here," said Smith.

"You're always going to be concerned because you never know who it can be, you step outside and it might be you or one of your family members or one of your friends," said Doyle.

That's why neighbors are encouraging anyone to report any crime to police.

Call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS if you have any information in the case. You will remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward if your tip leads to an arrest.
